Huge arms seized: 2 `pirates` killed in Noakhali `shootout`

Two suspected pirates were killed in a ‘shootout’ between their cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Char Balua in Companiganj upazila early Saturday.The deceased were identified as Sumon, 25, and Javed, 22, both members of notorious pirate gang ‘Jasu Bahini’.Sajedur Rahman Sajed, officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station, said on a tip-off, a team of Rab-11 launched a drive at Char Balua on Friday afternoon and arrested Sumon and Javed.Following their statement, the elite force along with Sumon and Javed went to different points in the char (shoal emerged on riverbed) area around 5:00 am to recover firearms.Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Sumon and Javed opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered a shootout.After the pirates fled the scene, Rab personnel saw the bodies of Sumon and Javed lying.Several firearms and bullets were recovered from the scene.On April 3, Shahjad Hossain Jasu, 42, chief of ‘Jasu Bahini’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and members of Rab at Char Balua.
