UNB, Satkhira :
The head of a faction of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML) and his associate were reportedly killed in a gunfight with police at Rahimabad Ambagan in Tala upazila early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Bidyut Bachhar, 46, head of
ML-Janajuddha, a faction of PBCP, and son of Kanai Lal Bachhar, a resident of Maguradanga village of the upazila, and his associate Sheikh Abu Talha, 22.
Tipped off that a gang of outlawed party men were preparing to commit robberies in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there around 3.15am, said Hasan Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Bidyut along with his accomplices opened fire on the police men, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight, police said. At one stage, they said, Bidyut and Talha were caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his other accomplices managed to flee the scene.
Later, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The law enforcers also recovered two shutter guns, two bombs, two sharp weapons and two bullets from the spot. Bidyut was wanted in 14 cases, including that of murder and extortion, the OC added.
