2 more drug peddlers killed in ‘gunfights’

Two more suspected drug peddlers were killed in reported ‘gunfights’ in Chandpur and Mymensingh district early Wednesday, raising the number of killing to at least 153 in the anti-narcotics drives across the country in the last 25 days.
The deceased have been identified as Yunus Miaji alias Sumon, 35, son of Abdul Majid Miaji from Madhya Sriramdi Bou Bazar area of Chandpur sadar upazila and Manik Mia, 30, son of Jagat Mia from Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh.
In Chandpur, acting on a tip off, a team of police conducted a drive in Bou Bazar area around 1:45am. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire on the police forcing them to retaliate as self-defence. Yunus sustained bullet injuries during the brief gunfight and was taken to Chandpur General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, said Chandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wali Ullah Oli.
Five policemen were injured in the incident, the police official said.
Police also recovered 101 pieces of Yaba tablets, one firearm, six bullets and two sharp weapons from the spot. Yunus was wanted in eight cases, said the OC.
In Mymensingh, alleged drug dealer Manik Mia was found dead in Klibari Char in Gafargaon upazila early Wednesday.
Manik, who was wanted in several cases, might have been killed in a gunfight between two gangs of drug traders, said Abdul Ahad, OC of Gafargaon police station.
Being informed by the locals, police recovered the body of Manik from the spot, said the OC.
Police also recovered 49 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.
However, victim’s brother Rajab Ali said police had picked up Manik from local bazar on Monday night and since then he remained missing.
Of 153 killed in the drive, 81 people were killed in alleged gunfights with police and DB members, 44 with RAB and 32 were killed during gunfights between rival groups, media reports.
However, the versions of these incidents provided by law enforcement agencies could not be verified independently.
