Anti-smuggling raid in train: 2 killed, 3 hurt in BGB firing

Two persons were killed and three others received injuries when members of Border Guard Bangladesh [BGB] fired bullets on smugglers during an anti- smuggling raid at Birampur railway station on Tuesday afternoon.
BGB personnel opened fire when they were allegedly attacked by the smugglers, police said.
The deceased were identified as Md. Shahin, 28, son of Shukur Ali, and Md. Sultan 24, son of Md. Abdur Rashid from Colonypara in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur.
Locals said, both the victims were cousins and they ran a hotel at Birampur station.
The bullet hit three wounded persons were taken to Birampur Health Complex for emergency treatment.
Protesting the firing which left two innocents dead, the angry villagers blocked the Dinajpur-Dhaka highway in Birampur upazila. The blockade was continuing till the time of filing of this report at 6.30pm yesterday.
Confirming the incident of death, Md. Amiruzzaman OC of Birampur upazila said the incident took place at around 4.00pm near the Birampur station.
Witnesses said that a Saidpur bound intercity train Rupsha Express was coming to Dinajpur. At Hili rail station a gang of smugglers got into the train.
As the train arrived at Birampur rail station around 4.00pm, a team of Phulbari 29 BGB raided the train to conduct search for smuggling goods.
As BGB members seized some smuggling goods at the station, the smugglers gang locked in altercation with the BGB members on the platform.
At one stage, the smugglers attacked BGB members and picked up one of them.
As situation was going beyond control, the BGB members fired bullets to control the situation, the bullets left two persons dead on the spot and injured three others.
Korban Ali Commanding Officer of Phulbari 29 Battalion said, his BGB members fired bullets in self defense following an attack by smugglers at Birampur Rail Station, but he was not sure how many people were killed in the firing.
SM Moniruzzaman, UNO of Birampur, said that initiatives had been taken to control the situation.
