Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists have allegedly beaten up and injured two journalists after they attempted to stop the harassment of a visiting female student at Shahjalal University of screen and Technology.
The student and her relatives told the Board of Proctors the incident occurred on the campus of the science and technology education institute on Saturday evening.
The injured have been identified as Daily Observer Sylhet Correspondent Sardar Abbas and Daily Sokaler Khobor University Correspondent Nobiul Alam Dipu.
Both have been admitted to Sylhet’s Osmani Medical Hospital.
Sardar Abbas is the
General Secretary of the university’s Press Club, while Syed Nobiul Alam is the vice president. BCL denied involvement in the incident.
“We have received a report of sexual harassment by a visiting student who had just completed her SSC exams,” said Proctor Munshi Nasser Ibne Afzal. “The matter will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”
According to the student’s testimony, she had come to visit the university campus with her cousin when two BCL members began to stalk them.
When the stalkers found she was not a student of the university they made ‘rude’ comments and blew smoke on her face.
One slapped her when she confronted them and the two began beating her cousin. They also threatened to kill them if they ever returned to the campus.
According to university press club Office Secretary Abdullah Al Mansur, a few journalists from the club went to ascertain what happened.
