Two women were killed and two people went missing when a boat capsized in the Shitalakkhya River at Central Kheyaghat area after two bulkheads crashed into it on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Sharifa Begum, 62, wife of Sirajul Islam of Babupara area and Parveen Akhter, 25, wife of Ali Hossain of Kalagachhia area of Bandar upazila.
Quoting witnesses, sub-inspector of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Arif Hossain said the boat sank in the river around 2:15pm after two sand-laden bulkheads – ‘MV Sajib and Hasnat’ and ‘MV Bristi’ hit it from the both sides,
leaving Sharifa dead on the spot and seven people injured.
The injured were rushed to Khanpur 300-beded hospital where Parveen died later.
Some 10-12 passengers managed to swim ashore while two people-Riaz and Badal – remained missing in the incident. Abu Hanif, sub-inspector of Bandar Police Station, said they arrested six workers from the two bulkheads.
