2 children missing as trawler sinks in Shitalakkha

Staff Reporter :Two children went missing when a trawler carrying 50 passengers sank in the Shitalakhha River at Koilaghat of Madanganj under Bandar upazila in Narayanganj on Saturday morning.The missing children have been identified as Sumaiya, 8, and Fahim, 3. They could not be traced till yesterday evening. Eight other passengers were also injured in the accident, police said. Quoting witnesses, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Shitalakhha River Police Outpost Nazrul Islam said that a Comilla-bound trawler sank in the riverwhen another sand-laden trawler hit it at around 10:00pm.Following the collision, some eight to 10 passengers, including the two minors, fell into the waters. All managed to swim ashore but the two toddlers went missing.Assistant Inspector of Marine Police Station, Nazrul Islam, said, “The trawler started from Meghnaghat of Comilla early in the morning. The destination of the passenger trawler was Shirajshah Darbar of Narayangonj.””On the other hand, the sand-laden cargo ship was coming towards Narayangonj from Munshiganj. The accident took place when the cargo collided with the backside of the passenger laden trawler. All passengers present in that trawler were able to swim ashore, but two little children went missing,” he added.Meanwhile, police seized the sand-carrying trawler while its master and his assistant escaped the scene.
