2 BCL leaders expelled Illegal use of firearms

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student front of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, on Monday expelled two of its leaders as they used firearms during a clash with the hawkers at Gulistan in the city.

They were identified as- Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman, a press release, signed by BCL President and Secretary General said on Monday. The move came four days after a national daily published a photo showing the carrying firearms during the clash over an eviction drive, conducted by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to remove illegal shops from the streets of Gulistan area on the day (October 27).

The BCL leaders also fired blank shots to frighten the hawkers in presence of police.

The police, however, could not take any step to arrest the BCL leaders.

Sabbir is the general secretary of BCL Dhaka South unit, while Ashiqur is the general secretary of Wari unit of BCL.

 “They were suspended from BCL as they breached the party code of conduct,” according to the release.

The BCL central office secretary, Delwar Hossain Shahzada, confirmed the expulsions while talking to The New Nation on Monday.

 “Sabbir and Ashiq have been expelled for violating party discipline,” he added.
