Some 18 fishermen, who had set out to the Bay of Bengal on a fishing trawler from Patuakhali’s Mahipur, 22 days ago, have yet to return till Friday.
On the evening of December 9, the fishing trawler “FB Al-Hasan” went deep into the sea from the Mahipur fishing port. Since then, the fishermen had not made any contact with the trawler owner or their relatives.
Ansar Uddin Molla, president of Kuakata Alipur Fish Wholesaler Cooperative Society, said: “We have informed Bangladesh Coast Guard and Bangladesh Navy about the matter while also continuing the search for the missing fishermen.”
Confirming the matter, Mahipur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said a general diary (GD) has been filed about 18 fishermen who went missing from the Bay of Bengal.
“Necessary action will be taken after routine inquiry,” he said. Md Nasir, son of Nazrul, one of the boatmen of the missing trawler, said they were not sure whether the trawler’s engine had died in the middle of the ocean and the boat drifted to neighbouring countries or if the trawler had been captured by pirates.
