Cattle farmers and traders are ready to sell sacrificial animals in 16 makeshift and two permanent cattle markets in the capital on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha.
Meanwhile, cattle farmers and the ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said that there are sufficient stocks of 1.21 crore cattles ready for sale of sacrificial animals this year.
Besides, reliable sources said that there will be somewhat crisis of small and medium size of cows in the market while the larger body cattle would be more available during the Qurbani Eid, one of the major religious festivals of the Muslims.
Farmers said that they are working hard for cattle feeds.
The current flood added the suffering more to them.
As a result, many farmers have sold their small and medium sizes cows earlier which may cause shortages of those size animals during the Eid.
When contacted, Imran Hossain, General Secretary of Bangladesh Dairy Farmers’ Association (BDFA) told The New Nation, “Cattle feed’s price is increasing day by day.” He urged the administration to be strict to stop cows smuggling in borders to save their farms.
Livestock Ministry data showed that a total of 9,093,242 animals have been slaughtered in the Eid-ul-Azha last year.
Of the total, 4,053,679 cows and buffaloes, 50,38,848 goats and sheep and 715 other cattle have been sacrificed.
Of the total temporary markets, nine will be set up by the Dhaka Seuth City Corporation (DSCC) and the seven by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas.
The corporations have handed over work orders to the leasees who have taken leases to set up makeshift cattle markets at the designated places.
The places where the makeshift cattle markets will be set up in the DSCC areas are North Sahajahanpur, Khilgaon Maitr Sangha Playground (near the level crossing), Institute of Leather Technology Playground at Hazaribagh, Postogola (open place near cremation ground), open place near Meradia Bazar, open place near Kamalapur stadium and Little Friends Club, open place near Dania College, open place near Dolaikhal, open place near Amulia Model Town, open place near Rahmatganj Club, and unused open place near Shyampur-Kadamtali Truck Stand.
Apart from those temporary cattle markets, the permanent haat of DSCC, at Sarulia, will also be used for selling sacrificial animals.
The DNCC- designated areas for the makeshift markets are- Bhatara Sayednagar, open place at Kaola Sialdanga, open spaces near Eastern Housing under Mirpur Section- 6, open spaces near Basila, Mohammadpur, open place from Bindaban to BGMEA at Sector- 17, Uttara, open spaces near Eastern Housing from Block- E, Block- H at Badda and open spaces near Kuril 300 Feet Road.
Besides, the DNCC’s Gabtoli permanent cattle market will also be selling sacrificial animals on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the DNCC authorities have started taking preparations for selling sacrificial animals by its online platform, through dncc.digitalhat.net.
Sources from DSCC and DNCC said that the two city corporations have earned Tk about 29 crores revenues from leasing the 16 makeshift sacrificial cattle markets.
When contacted Rasel Sabrin, Chief Estate Officer of the DSCC told The New Nation that they have earned about Tk 23 crore revenues from leasing the nine temporary sacrificial cattle markets.
Besides, the DNCC has earned Tk six crore from those markets.
In 2021, Dhaka’s two city corporations have earned Tk 220,533,452 from the lease of capital’s 20 sacrificial animal markets.
The DNCC earned, Tk 6 crore from the lease of its 10 cattle markets, and the DSCC’s income from 10 cattle markets was Tk 16,0,533,452.
