The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to a man who was in jail for 17 years without any trial in a murder case.
The name of the victim is Shipon who was arrested in 2000 by police in a murder case.
A two-member HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hasan passed the order.
While granting bail, the court observed that it was quite unfortunate for the country’s judiciary that a man passed 17 years in jail without trial.
The HC ordered the Dhaka Additional District Judge’s Court for the settlement of the case within two months, while granting bail to the man until the settlement of the case.
The HC also directed the Dhaka Legal Aid Office to take necessary steps for submission of papers of his bail without any cost.
The court asked the Dhaka District Administration for providing supports for the victim’s rehabilitation in case of need.
Earlier, in 1994, a man was killed in a clash between two groups of people in Sutrapur area in the capital.
Later the victim’s relatives filed a case in connection with the murder, describing Shipon as No. 2 accused.
Police arrested him in 2000 and produced him in a court, which sent him to jail.
Shipon was shifted to Kashimpur Jail on November 7 last year.
Recently, an investigative report was aired by a private television channel in this regard while Supreme Court lawyer Kumar Debol Dey sought the High Court’s attention by submitting the report.
