The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all human beings enjoy peace and prosperity. These 17 Global Goals comprise of 169 targets and will guide policy and funding for the next 15 years.
Building on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Goals include new areas such as economic inequality, innovation, climate change, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among others. The SDGs are universal, inclusive and a bold commitment to people and planet.
Speaking about the importance of Sustainable Development Goals UNDP Country Director Ms Pauline Tamesis said that although UNDP has been regularly showcasing Bangladesh’s MDG achievements, it is important we focus on the future, particularly on the well-recognized “unfinished business”. She also emphasized that for the SDGs it will be crucial to monitor and improve the quality of the services offered.
Lauding Bangladesh’s success in the digital sector, ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that Bangladesh is in advantageous position due to its demographic dividend and the Government has different projects in pipeline to train the youth in the IT sector to create valuable human resources. He also added that the government is currently in the process of establishing 100,000 public Wi-Fi zones to make internet more affordable and available to the masses.
The Sustainable Development Goals will be globally launched on 25 September when world leaders will come together at the 70th United Nations General Assembly. The new SDGs and targets will come into effect on 1st January 2016.
