Bangladesh on Saturday reported 16 more deaths from COVID-19 and 930 more positive with the novel coronavirus in the country in the last 24 hours.
“With the new cases, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 314 and the number of infections reached 20,995,” said Directorate General of Health Services Additional Director General Professor Dr. Nasima Sultana in her daily online bulletin in Dhaka on COVID-19 situation.
Dr. Sultana said that the information was received from test reports of 33 labs among 41 ones in the country.
She said that among the infected, 605 were from Dhaka and the rests from other districts.
The DGHS official said that among the deceased, 12 were from Dhaka, two from Chattogram and the other two from Rangpur division.
All of the 16 deceased were males, Dr Sultana said, adding that one of them was between 71-80 years old, three between 61-70, six within 51-60, five between 41-50 and the other one between 31-40 years old.
A total of 349 people were put under isolation in the last 24 hours which brought the total number to 3,046 across the country.
Dr. Sultana said that 6,782 specimens were tested at authorised labs across the country during that period.
With this, a total of 167,114 samples have so far been tested in the country.
The DGHS official said that the recovery count also jumped
to 4,117 after another 235 COVID-19 patients were released from hospital in the same period.
The official urged all to stay at home and follow rules and regulations of the Health Directorate.
She urged all to wear face mask, hand gloves and goggles in emergency case of going out.
Bangladesh on March 8 confirmed the first COVID-19 case and the first death on March 18.
The country passed 70th day on Saturday since the first infection.
To contain the worsening coronavirus situation, the government on Thursday extended shutdown of government and private offices further until May 30 across the country.
Besides, the public transport services will also remain suspended until May 30, the Roads and Highways Division (RHD) said it.
