Road accidents: 16 including a nat’l handball team player killed

At least 16 people, including a national handball team player, were killed and 40 others injured in separate road accidents across the country between Friday and Saturday.
In Tangail, four persons were killed and 12 others injured when a local Leguna hit a Pickup van in front of Sohagpara Jui-Juthi Pump area under Mirzapur upazila of Tangail on Saturday.
The accident took place on the Dhaka-Tangail highway at around 6 am.
The deceased were Jahanur, 18, wife of one Sultan Miah

from Gobindarai village under Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha, Tapan Chandra Das, 25, son of one Amalya Chandra Das, from the same area, Marjina Begum, 27, wife of one Al Amin Miha from Gopalpur Upazila of Tangail and Rasheda Begum of Rangpur.
Local sources said that all the victims had reportedly been working for ‘Nasir Glass Industry.’ The injured were admitted to Kumudini Hospital.
Moniruzzaman, In-charge of Gorai highway police confirmed the matter to the media and said that the accused driver could not be detained as the covered van fled away.
In Natore, at least two persons were killed when Rajshahi bound truck rammed into a motorbike near the Bon Belgharia area at around 8:00 pm.
The deceased were identified as Golam Nabi, 40 , from Rajshahi district, and his brother-in-law Foysal Ahmed, 30, of Chondrokala village of Natore district.
Natore Sadar Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam confirmed the accident and said “On information, we reached the spot and seized the truck. A case was filled in this regard.”
The bodies will be handed over to the families after autopsies, said the official.
In Kushtia, at least four persons were killed in two separate road crashes of the district last two days.
Two persons were killed and two others injured in a road accident on the Kushtia-Ishwardi Highway at 10 Mile of Bheramara upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as trolley driver Shukur Ali, 35, and his assistant Alamin, 18, residents of village Moslempur.
Shahjalal, officer-in-charge of Bheramara police station, said the accident took place around 8:30am as a truck hit their vehicle, leaving the duo dead on the spot and two others injured.
Meanwhile, a National Handball Team player and his friend were killed in a tragic road crash in Daulatpur upazila on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Sohanur Rahman Sohan, son of one Kalu Mondal, the goalkeeper of Bangladesh National Handball Team, and his friend Solaiman Hossain Joy, son of one Shaidul Islam. Both were residents of Bahirmadi village of the upazila.
Dr Tapas Kumar Sarker, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Kushtia General Hospital said.
In Pabna, at least two persons were killed when a bus hit a motorcycle on the Pabna-Rajshahi highway in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna last night.
The deceased were identified as Bachhu Mondol ,40, son of one Taher Mondol and Bulbul Sheikh ,35, son of one Mohidul Sheikh from Goalbathan village in the upazila.
Bahauddin Faruki, Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said the bus hit the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction at Muladuli point of the highway around 7:30pm, leaving the motorcyclist and his passenger dead on the spot.  
In Gopalganj, an elderly van puller was killed in a tragic road crash in Muksudpur upazila of the district on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Zafar Munshi, 70, from Kolakona village of Gobindapur Union.
Muksudpur Thana OC Mirza Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the news to the media and said that though bus was seized, the driver managed to flee from the spot.
In Barishal, an youth was killed and another injured when a pickup van ran over him at Rahmatpur Bridge in Babuganj upazila of on Friday.
The accident occurred on the Barishal-Dhaka highway at around 1:30 pm. The victim was identified as Omar Ali Kazi, 40, son of one Motahar Ali-a resident of Rajkor village under Babuganj upazila.
In Rajshahi, a pedestrian named Amjaz Hossain,65, was killed when a truck rammed him in city’s Binodbazar area on Saturday morning.
It is mentionable that Nirapad Sarak Chai, a road safety advocacy group, in a report said that 5,227 people were killed in 4,702 road accidents in Bangladesh last year.
