Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said anti-liberation forces in 16 different groups are engaged in terrorist activities in the country but all the groups have the same root, Jamaat. The Prime Minister said this when Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Greg Wilcock made a farewell call on her at her Parliament office.
After the meeting, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters. Referring to vandalism and torching by the BNP-Jamaat nexus before and after the last general election as well as in 2015, Sheikh Hasina
said they burnt the people to death and destroyed public property during the period. Referring to some recent killings, she said the terrorists have now chosen soft targets like Imams of mosques, Fathers of churches, priests of pagodas. The Prime Minister mentioned her government’s economic policy and said her party adopted the policy through a wide range of discussions and seminar on it as it wants to ensure development of the country fulfilling the election pledge. At the meeting, the Australian High Commissioner lauded the
stunning successes of the government under dynamic and visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina and said the changes in his tenure in Dhaka are visible. Praising the growing trend of trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Australia, he said the business figure has now stood at 1.7 billion US dollars in just five years from 800 million dollars.
Greg Wilvock stressed the need for boosting cooperation between the two countries on sports and said Australian Cricket Board wants to assist the BKSP to further develop it. In this connection, the outgoing High Commissioner said Australian Cricket Board is working with BCB for a tour of Australian National Team to
Bangladesh. During the time, the Prime Minister recalled her visit to the Australian Cricket Academy.
She raised the issue of Bangladeshi Young cricket sensation Mustafiz and said he is Bangladesh’s ‘Jewel’ and he needs to play very carefully to protect his future potential. Talking bout cooperation in the energy sector,
the envoy said, Australian Company SANTOS wants to work with the BAPEX in this sector.
On security issues, the envoy highly appreciated the steps of the government for undertaking various measures to ensure the security of diplomatic zones while the Prime Minister stressed the need for exchanging information in this regard. Referring to the visit of foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque to Australia two months ago, Greg Wilcock said the foreign office-level consultations were held during the time to further enhance cooperation between the two countries. The Australian outgoing High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for extending cooperation in discharging responsibilities during his tenure in Bangladesh.
