16 arrested on different charges

Police arrested 16 persons on different charges in Chittagong on Tuesday.
In Satkania, police arrested 12 persons from Bajalia, Carkhagaria, Kaliyash and Kanchana areas, reports our correspondent.
Seven were arrested with 279 pieces of yaba pills and 25 litres of locally-made liquor, said OC Rafikul Islam of Satkania Police Station. The rest had arrest warrants against them.
Meanwhile, Rab arrested four alleged muggers in port city’s CRB area in the afternoon, reports our staff correspondent, quoting Mimtanur Rahaman, assistant director of RAB-7.
Trader arrested over fake pay order at auction : The authorities of Custom House, Chittagong yesterday handed over a trader to Bandar police for allegedly submitting a fake pay order worth around Tk 61 lakh in an auction.
The trader, Helal Uddin, is the proprietor of Arafat Enterprises and Satata Traders.
Custom house sources said an auction was held on May 24 for cars and other products. According to conditions, around 10 percent money of the products’ value should be deposited into bank through pay orders.
However, on behalf of his firm, the trader deposited Tk 60.97 lakh into United Commercial Bank, Gulshan Branch, Dhaka through 19 fake pay orders, they said.
Tapan Chandra Dey, deputy commissioner of the custom house, said the issue was in limelight during inspection.
A case was filed against him, said the DC.
