Barisal police seized 1500 sacks of urea fertilizers weighing 950 metric ton at Puratan Shikarpur area under Wazirpur Upazila of the district on Sunday noon.
Law enforcers also seized two cargo vessels anchored on Sandhya River, two trucks engaged in unloading fertilizers from the vessels and detained six staff’s of those two vessels.
The detained six were Sher Alam, 45, Mojibor Rahman, 37, Jasimuddin 40, Rana 30, Delwar, 35, and Mintu Khan, 35. Police yet to find out the actual owner of the fertiliser.
Golam Sorwar, officer in charge of Wazirpur Police Station, acknowledging the facts said seized urea was unloading at Shikarpur, while there was no buffer godown for stocking fertilizer.
So it was suspected that the fertilizers were smuggled for use in the region during Boro harvesting season on high price.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team when reached at the spot found that MV Tamal and MV Tamal-1 unloading the urea sacks from cargo and loading those on trucks.
Police said both vessels came from Chittagong and during interrogation, the staffs of the cargo vessels and trucks failed to show any legal documents in favour of their goods, the OC of Wazirpur PS added.
