At least 15 people, including the acting proctor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, were injured in a factional clash of the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, on the campus on Sunday.
SUST acting proctor Zahid Hasan, assistant proctor Abu Hena Pahil and lecturer Mahathir Mohammad Bappi were among the injured.
Witnesses said that supporters of the BCL campus unit cultural affair secretary Shakhawat Hossain beat up two activists of the same organisation – Sohel Rana and Suman Bappi, who were supporters of the organisation’s another leader Mushfiqur Rahman Zia, in front of food court on the campus at about 4:00pm, following an altercation over seniority.
Later, activists of both the groups were locked in the clash in front of Shah Paran Hall, leaving more than 15 activists of both sides injured.
SUST acting proctor Zahid Hasan said that they interrupted clashers and took the situation under control.
He admitted that he and two of his colleagues sustained injuries during the clash. ‘Steps will be taken against the students involved in the clash,’ he said, adding that additional police were deployed on the campus.
