DU Correspondent :
At least 15 activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were injured by an attack by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday.
The accident took place in front of Nilkhet Police Outpost, but no policeman could be seen at the time.
The injured JCD activists were given primary treatment at different hospitals in the capital. About a dozen activists, including JCD president and general secretary who were seriously injured, are still under treatment.
The BCL members attacked them when 30-35 JCD leaders were coming through Nilkhet to the university to meet DU vice-chancellor, proctor and Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA)’s members as a pre-scheduled programme.
The BCL of Sir A F Rahman Hall unit carried out the attack led by its president Reazul Islam and general secretary Munem Shahriar Moon in front of the hall while around hundreds of BCL leaders and activists from different halls staying behind them.
“When the JCD leaders reached in front of Nilkhet Police Outpost near Sir AF Rahman Hall, the BCL leaders and activists attacked them with bamboo sticks and stumps inhumanly,” eyewitnesses said.
“Around 15-20 leaders of us were injured by BCL attack. We strongly protest this incident and demand exemplary punishment for the attackers,” Khorshed Alam Sohel, President of JCD DU unit said.
After beating and driving them out of the campus, the BCL shouted slogans at Nilkhet Chattor for one and a half hour,
while Reazul Islam, president of FR Hall said, “Those who enter the campus with sticks will not have a place on this campus. BCL will prevent them.”
Later, some BCL activists urged journalists to write their names as attackers in their news so that they can draw attention and get posts in the hall committee.
Moreover, BCL had a pre-scheduled programme of giving memorandum to DU vice-chancellor with some demands at around 3pm. After handing over the memorandum, the BCL took position at the different points of the campus to prevent the entry of JCD.
DU proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, “I heard about the accident. We are preparing a report about the accident.”
“The JCD was given permission to hold a courtesy meeting with the vice-chancellor and us,” he added.
