Bergman trial: 15 exonerated of contempt charge, ICT accepts apology

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT) on Monday accepted the apology of the 15 eminent personalities and exonerated them of the contempt charge for their statement on the tribunal’s order against British journalist David Bergman.
The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Obaidul Hassan, accepted the apology of the 15 dignitaries as they begged unconditional pardon through their lawyers,
while fixed March 3 to pass its order about the remaining 34 persons.
The acquitted 15 persons are: Dr Shahdeen Malik, former advisors of the caretaker government M Hafizuddin and Rashida K Chowdhury, Tahmima Anam, Badiul Alam Majumder, Imtiaz Ahmed, Amena Mohsin, Naila Khan, Shahnaz Huda, Syeda Rezwana Hasan, Dr Asif Nazrul, Zakir Hossain, Arup Rahi, Saina Akhter and Ilora Dewan. Advocate Jotirmoy Barua appeared for the respondents.
A total of 50 persons gave a statement on December 20 last year, expressing their concern over the tribunal’s order on Bergman. Later, Khushi Kabir withdrew her name from the statement.
Later, the tribunal issued contempt notice against 49 persons on January 14, seeking explanation from them for their statement.
The 15 persons offered unconditional apology through their lawyers on January 27, the other 10 respondents, including Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, appeared before the tribunal and gave themselves their explanations.
The tribunal-2 fined Bergman Taka 5,000, in default seven days imprisonment, on December 2 for his write-up in his personal blog, making comments on sub judice matters in the tribunal.
Bergman, a British national, is the son-in-law of the eminent jurist of the country Dr Kamal Hossain. He is working for the English newspaper ‘The New Age’.
