10,000 people marooned: 14 villages submerged in Teesta basin

At least 10,000 people have become marooned in 14 villages in Teesta shoals and low -lying areas in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas of the district as the river has started swelling from Tuesday night.
Sub Divisional Engineer (Ex-en) of BWDB at Dalia Division Fazlul Huque informed that the water level of the Teesta is 52.66 meters at Dalia point on Wednesday afternoon which is 26 centimeter above the danger mark. The danger mark at Dalia point is 52.40 meter.
The river is swelling fast as India opened all the gates of Gojaldoba barrage in the upstream to release the ‘excess’ water from heavy rain fall in its territories, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said. In addition to water from India, heavy rainfall inside Bangladesh also added to the situation.
With the rise of Teesta river, water in other major rivers of the district like Charal Kata, Deonai, Buri Teesta, Buri khora, Jamuneswari, Nautara and Panga have also swelled inundating jute, vegetable fields and amon seed beds of large area.
The rswelling Teesta has marooned at least 10,000 people of 14 villages in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila of the district as floodwater continued to sweep through the low-lying villages.
Chairman of Khalisha Chapani village of Dimla upazila Ataur Rahman informed that three villages of his union namely Chhoto Khata, Banpara and Baish Pukur have been inundated and about 3500 people in those areas have become marooned as Teesta was flowing much above the danger mark from Tuesday night.
The affected villages are : Uttor Kharibari, Kisamoter Char, Baish Pukur, Vendabari, Tapur Char, Kisamat Chhatnai, Chhatunama, Bhabon Chur, Sati Ghat, Jharsingheswar, Gopal Jhar, Holdibari, Chhotokhata and Banpara.
Heavy rainfall has made an embankment point of Teesta vulnerable at Bhaban Chur and Gopal Jhar points in Jaldhaka upazila.
Most of the houses in those areas have gone under 2-3 feet water. The people there are suffering from dry food and drinking water.
Mostafizur Rahman, executive engineer of BWDB’s Dalia division said that there is nothing worry, as the situation is not beyond control.
One lakh marooned as flood hits Lalmonirhat: UNB from Lalmonirhat adds: Onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfall over the last couple of days has flooded more than 63 chars (shoals emerged from the riverbed) in the district, leaving about one lakh people marooned.
The Tista and Dharala rivers were flowing 22 centimetres above their danger marks at Doani Barrage point in the morning, according to the district flood control room.
Besides, Dharala river was flowing 15 centimetere above the danger line in Kulaghat point of the district.
Most of the roads went under water following heavy rainfall in the last two days, causing immense sufferings to the villagers.
However, district administration has opened some 44 gates of the Tista Barrage to control the situation.
