The 14-party alliance conveyed its concern about the intention of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Sunday.
A 14-member delegation of 14-party alliance, led by the General Secretary of Bangladesh Samyobadi Dal and former minister Dilip Barua, met the CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at his office ahead of the City Corporation elections.
BNP Chairperson is trying to spread violence and subversive activities in a planned way, alliance leader Fazle Hossain Badshah, the General Secretary of Bangladesh Workers Party, told journalists after the meeting.
“We are apprehending that Khaleda Zia is trying to create trouble before the election. She is instigating her men to carry out subversive activities to spoil the electoral atmosphere just ahead of the polls,” he said.
Khaleda Zia is uttering derogatory remarks against Shahasra Nagorik Committee-backed candidates, Badshah said.
“She is holding rallies on the city streets, causing trouble to the pedestrians. Sensing her attitude, we warned the CEC of the ill-intention of Khaleda Zia,” he said.
Talking to the journalists, Badshah said the army should not be used like a regular force. “The CEC assured us that they would take required measures to prevent subversive activities,” he said.
The 14-party leaders also requested the CEC to take legal action against Khaleda Zia for violating election code of conduct, he said.
Among other 14-party leaders, Awami League leader Mrinal Kanti Das, Dr Shahadat Hossain of Gonotontri Party, Dr Wajedul Islam of United Communist League and JSD leader Shirin Akhter also met the CEC.
