Aug 17 series blast: 14 JMB men get 20 years jail

A court here on Tuesday sentenced 14 members of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years imprisonment in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
The convicts are-Enayetullah of Gopalganj district, Arman Bin Azad, Abdullah Al Mamun, Russel, Habibur Rahman Habib, Mizan, Abdul Ahad, Habil Uddin, Rustam Ali, Tarik, Yeamin Mia of Tangail district, Delwar Hossain of Narayanganj district, Shahidul Islam Shahid of Bagerhat district and Abdullah Al Tasnim of Dhamrai in Dhaka.
Of them Arman, Russel, Tarik and Tasnim were tried in absentia.
The court also fined them Tk 30,000 each, in default, to suffer three years more rigorous imprisonment.
Judge Abul Mansur Ahmed of Additional District and Session Judge Court-1 handed down the verdict.
According to the prosecution, several bombs were exploded at Tangail Court premises, Shahid Jaglu Road and Babystand area as part of the countrywide series bomb blast on 17th August, 2005. A case was filed with Tangail Sadar Police Station.
SK Khoda, the then sub-inspector and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against 16 JMB men, including then JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and its operations commander Siddikul Islam alias Bangla Bhai. Six militants, including Abdur Rahman and Bangla Bhai, were executed in March 2007 for killing two Jhalakathi judges.
