136 km illegal gas lines, 22k burners

About 136 kilometers gas pipe lines and above 22000 burners are remaining illegally despite government’s earlier announcement of keeping it zero by last December.
Sources said, the Ministry Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has formed a committee to remove all illegal gas connection. The committee had been given directives to cut all illegal gas lines by December 31 in 2020 across the country.
But the directives have not been fulfilled even after passing one month more.
Reliable sources said, officials expressed their dissatisfactions over failure of removing a big portion of illegal gas connection lines in a recent meeting of the committee took place in the energy division. Officials said, the energy division identified about 716 kilometers gas pipe lines and 3,27608 burners as illegally connected in last year.
The division then directed the committee to remove all of those unlawful connections by December 31, in 2020.
But the committee failed to dismantle a notably portions of the illegal gas connections, the meeting sources revealed.
The officials disconnected about 580 kilometers illegal gas pipe lines and removed about 3,25,559 burners which was set without any legal permissions.
A recent report of the energy division revealed that about 128 kilometers illegal pipeline connection has been remained lone Titas Gas Company.
Besides, Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company has eight kilometers illegal gas connections.
On the other hand, Titas gas has 21854 and the Bakrabad company has 195 illegal burners till now.
An official from the energy division said preferring anonymity that in early days the dishonest persons established non-permitted burners in the main pipelines, but nowadays, they set illegal pipelines first and then the burners.
“So, our duty becomes tough as we have to cut the unlawful pipelines first, then the burners,” he said. The participants of the meeting alleged that employees of the gas distribution companies are involved establishing illegal lines.
Dhaka metropolitan police DC (Operation), attended in the meeting alleged such saying persons from other professions cannot make an illegal gas pipe line connection.
“So, the employees of gas distribution companies have be warned first,” he suggested in the meeting.
When contacted, Senior Secretary for the Energy and Mineral Resources Division Md Anisur Rahman told The New Nation that he cannot say anything regarding these as he infected with Covid-19 and is staying under medical treatment.
Besides, Titas Managing Director Ali Md Al-Mamun failed to receive phone calls repeatedly while trying to get his comments on this regards on Thursday.
