13 lose lives in road crashes in 6 dists

UNB, Dhaka: Thirteen people were killed and 48 others injured in road accidents in Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Dhaka, Chittagong, Sirajganj and Jhalakati districts on Wednesday.

In Dinajpur, four people, including a woman and a child, were killed and 40 others injured as a bus overturned on Dhaka-Dinajpur highway in front of Gobindapur Palli Bidyut office in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained yet.

Police said the driver lost his control over the steering of the Thakurgaon-bound bus from Dinajpur whereby it turned turtle on the highway around 1:30 pm while giving side to a human hauler, leaving two passengers dead on the spot and 42 injured.

Of the injured, 33 were rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital where a woman and a child succumbed to their injuries.

In Thakurgaon, three people, including a woman, were killed and a minor boy was injured as a minibus hit a pickup on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway at Baro Khonchabari in Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Ramjan Ali, 60, and Abdul Gaffar, 60, residents of Rajbari village, and Rozina Akhter, 22, of Prannagar village in the upazila.

Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the Dinajpur-bound minibus hit the speeding pickup on the highway around 11 am, leaving its two passengers — Ramjan and Gaffar — dead on the spot and Rozina and her year-year-old boy injured.

The injured were taken to Adhunik Sadar Hospital where Rozina succumbed to her injuries.

In the capital, an elderly couple was killed as a speeding car hit them in Shewrapara area in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Ataur Rahman, 70, and his wife Rawshan Ara, 60.

Sub-inspector Meherunnisa, a duty officer at Kafrul Police Station, said the speeding car hit them as they were standing near a road adjacent to Shewrapara bus stand around 6:30 am, leaving them dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the bodies and handed those over to family members without any autopsy.

In Chittagong, two people, including a woman, were killed and four others injured as a truck hit a minibus on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Madanhaat in Sitakunda upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Polina, 30, a tribal woman, and Shaymlal Chandra Paul, 42.

Saleh Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Baro Aulia Highway Police Camp, said the goods-laden truck hit the stationary minibus after its driver lost control over its steering and plunged into a roadside ditch, leaving a minibus passenger and a truck passenger dead on the spot, and four others injured.
