13 killed in separate road accidents

At least 13 people, including two women, were killed in separate road accidents in different parts of the country on Thursday.
Of the victims, four persons died and 25 other were injuried when a bus turned turtle on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj in the morning.
They were identified as Mohammad Johnny, 30, bus helper and resident of Munshiganj and three passengers — Alek Mia, 45, of Munshiganj; Parul Begum, 24, wife of Fazor Ali of Comilla and Hasan Meah, 35.
The police with the help of locals recovered the bodies and rescued the injured passengers. The injured persons were rushed to local hospitals.”The accident occurred when a Comilla-bound bus from Dhaka turned turtle in Triburdi New Bus Stand area after its driver lost control over steering. The helper and three other passengers died on the spot. About 25 others were injured in the accident,” said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge [Investigation] of Sonargaon Police Station.
The number of death, he said, might increase as the condition of some of the injured passengers was stated to be critical.
The vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for nearly half an hour following the accident.
In another fatal accident, at least four persons were killed on the spot and six others severely injured when a running train rammed a ‘votvoti’ at a level crossing near Velurpara Railway Station under Sonatola upazila in Bogra district. The victims were identified as votvoti driver Alamgir Hossain, 40 and three passengers-Abu Taher, 22, Nayeb Ali, 35 and Sanowar Hossain, 42. All of them hailed from Sonatola area.
The ‘votvoti’ carrying more than a dozen of passengers was going from Sonatola to Syed Ahmed College Hat. The Santahar-bound Dolonchapa Express hit the votvoti at the level crossing on the northern side of Velurpara Railway Station at about 3:15 pm.
The driver of the votvoti was trying to cross the level crossing defying the signal. Two passengers died on the spot and two others succumbed to injuries on way to nearby Sonatola Health Complex, witnesses said.
OC of Sonatola Police Station AKM Khalequzzaman when contacted said some of the critically injured passengers have been shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College for better treatment.
In Rajshahi district, an assistant teacher of Bautia Dakhil Madrassa named Yasin Ali, 55, was killed in a tragic road accident at Godabari area in the morning. Police said the victim Yasin Ali received fatal injuries being hit by a running truck when he was crossing Rajshahi-Chapainababgabj Highway at Medical Crossing area of upazila sadar.
Locals rushed to the spot just after the accident and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead. In Madaripur district, a driver of ‘Nosimon’ was killed on the spot in a face-to-face collision with a speedy truck at New Bus Stand area of Sadar upazila at about 12:30 pm.
The brick-laden truck was going from Madaripur town to Mostafapur, eyewitnesses said. It hit the Nosimon while it was coming towards the town. The agitated local people seized the truck, but its driver managed to escape the scene.
Assistant SP of Madaripur district Abu Bakar Siddique confirming the news of accident said the police were looking for the absconding truck driver. In Faridpur, a school student was killed and four others received severe injuries in a road accident at Bhanga upazila. Of the injured, the condition of one was stated to be critical.
The driver of a bus, carrying devotees of Chandrapara Darbar Shahrif, lost control of the steering as one the tyres burst at Manukdah-Kalibari area. The bus later hit an auto bike injuring at least four school students and its driver.
Local people rushed the injured to Atrashi Biswa Zaker Manjil Hospital, where a student of class ten of Shib Sundari Academy succumbed to injuries. Sub Inspector of Bhanga Police Station said the agitated people damaged the killer bus and barricaded the adjacent highway.
A motorbike riding father and his son were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Court Bari area in Comilla Thursday afternoon. The victims were identified as Md Jamal Hossain, 45 and his son Masud Rana,20. They were residents of Sujanagar in district Sadar.
Witnesses said they died on the spot when a speedy goods-laden lorry hit the motorcycle. Highway police recovered the bodies and sent them to morgue for autopsy.
