13 CU students hurt in `BCL attacks`

At least 13 students of Chittagong University were injured in attacks allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men on the campus on Wednesday.
Witnesses said a group of students, including leaders and activists of left-leaning organisations, brought out a procession from the CU Central Student Union (CUCSU) protesting the BCL attacks on the students of Dhaka University.
When the procession reached in front of IT Bhaban on the campus around 1pm, a group of BCL men numbering 30-40 obstructed the procession and swooped on the processionists. Later, a chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups. On information, a team of proctorial body rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Later, the BCL men again attacked the students when the leaders and activists of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote brought out another procession from Unmukto Mancha around 3pm. They beat the students.
Fazle Rabbi, convener of Chhatra Front’s university unit, claimed that the BCL men equipped with sticks and sharp weapons attacked the students, leaving 15-20 injured.
Niaz Morshed Ripon, proctor of the university, said the situation remained under control.
