Law enforcing agencies have said the areas in Rangpur division scarred by petrol bomb attacks and arson during the BNP blockade are dominated by its close ally, Jamaat-e-Islami.
Police and other forces identified 13 such areas as ‘dangerous’ and started raids to neutralise the saboteurs.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur range, Humayun Kabir, said vehicles were coming under firebomb attacks at Chirirbandar, Ranirbandar, Kaharol and Ghoraghat in Dinajpur, Kishoreganj and Jaldhaka in Nilphamari, Mithapukur and Pirganj in Rangpur and Gaibandha’s Sadar, Sundarganj, Sadullapur, Palashbari and Gobindaganj.
“These areas are dominated by Jamaat. Vehicles are vandalised and torched whenever the 20-Party Alliance calls blockade or shutdown.
“Police and security forces are also attacked,” Humayun said.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) joined the police bid to stop sabotage in these ‘dangerous’ areas, the DIG said.
BGB Rangpur sector’s commander for north-south zone Mahfuzur Rahman said 10 platoons of his force were
deployed to safeguard the highways in the division. It also set up four camps at Syedpur in Nilphamari, Mithapukur in Rangpur, and Palashbari and Gobindaganj in Gaibandha for the safe passage of long-distance vehicles, he said.
DIG Humayun said 15 people, including three children, were killed in the area in the past month in firebomb attacks during the blockade.
A total of 65 people were injured in the violence. Of them, 42 were burnt in petrol bomb attacks.
BGB’s Mahfuzur said 180 vehicles were vandalised and 34 torched in these ‘ dangerous areas’ in the one month of blockade.
The first death in violence in the areas took place at Mithapukur in Rangpur on Jan 23 when blockaders firebombed a bus killing six.
On the following day, an assistant of a truck driver at Chirirbandar in Dinajpur and another truck driver at Ghoraghat in the district were burnt alive in similar attacks.
On Friday night, a firebombing at Tulsighat in Gaibandha left seven people killed.
The indefinite blockade across the country has already claimed over 60 lives.
