12 killed in road accidents

Staff Reporter :Twelve people were killed and 28 others injured in separate road accidents in Bandarban, Comilla, Tangail and Savar on Thursday morning.Seven people were killed and eight others injured at 7:30am as a truck plunged into a ditch in Lama upazila of Bandarban district.The deceased were identified as Mohammad Rakib, 45, Mohammad Rajib,40, Mohammad Rabin,35, Aftab Hossain, 55, Mohammad Amzad, 42, and Alek Hossain, 21, all residents of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna and Hasan Ali, 45, an inhabitant of Satkhira district. Witnesses said a truck carrying materials of a cell phone tower from Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar fell into the ditch after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four day labourers dead on the spot and 11 others injured.Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, OC of Lama Police Station, said three others injured died when police and army officials took them to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex.He said the bodies were sent to Bandarban District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.In another incident, two people were killed and nine others injured in a collision between a bus and a truck in Kalihati upazila of Tangail in the early hours of Thursday.Shahidul Islam Shikder, Bangabandhu Bridge (East) Police Station OC said the accident took place around 1.30am on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Azizul Islam, 70, and Shahidul Islam, 45.He said two people died on the spot.In Comilla, two passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed after a bus rammed into the auto-rickshaw at Debidar of the district on Thursday morning.The accident took place on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 7:00am. Md Abdul Awal, Moinamoti highway police station OC said the deceased are Md Abdur Rahim, 35, and Md Shohel, 32.He said the duo died on the spot. Police recovered the bodies and took those to the police station.In Savar, a worker was killed and 10 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Kalma Number 2 Bus Stand area of the upazila on Thursday morning.The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 40, a resident of Kalma Aukpara Adarsha village.
