DU Correspondent :
At least 12 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, were injured in sporadic clashes between the organization’s two rival groups over occupying seats and establishing supremacy in Salimullah Muslim Hall of Dhaka University on Thursday night.
The injured were given primary treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and University Medical Center.
Witnesses said, the clash took place around 11:30pm between the followers of the hall unit BCL president Tahsan Ahmed Rasel and the unit secretary Mehedi Hasan Taposh.
Hall sources said, the followers of Taposh displaced new student, supporter of Tahsan, and walloped him.
The activists of the two factions chased each other with iron rods, sticks, machetes and brick-bats. The fight lasted for half an hour, frightening general students.
University Proctor AM Amzad and senior leaders of Chhatra League rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Taposh said, “My activists removed a bed from the pathway as it used to disturb us to move freely.
But Rasel’s followers beat my five activists brutally with iron rods. They also vandalized around 30 beds of the new students on the balcony.”
Rejecting the allegation, hall unit President Rasel said that they rather clubbed my activist, earlier and displaced his bed.
Taposh’s follower chased us with rods and machetes and my seven activists were injured, he added.
Dhaka University chapter BCL President Abid al Hasan said organisational steps would be taken against the perpetrators.
Acting proctor AM Amzad said punitive measures would be taken after investigations.
