A team of Customs Intelligence Department arrested seven persons and seized 119 gold bars weighing around 14 Kg worth about Tk 7 crore from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIN) on Sunday. The smugglers boarded on the flight at Sylhet Osmany International Airport as domestic passengers, said the customs officials at the airport. The detained persons have been identified as Md Jasim Uddin, Amir Hossain, Rashed Chowdhury, Md Nazim Uddin, Salauddin Ahmed, Lokman Bhuiyan and Anwar Hossain, all of them are the inhabitants of Chittagong.Hossain Ahmed, Commissioner of Customs Department at the airport said that the gold bars have been smuggled into the country from Dubai on a BimanBangladesh Airlines flight by some members of a gang of smugglers. The gang members got out of the flight at Sylhet airport by handing over the smuggled gold to those seven persons who boarded the flight there, he added.The flight of the national flag carrying airlines from Dubai arrived at Dhaka airport around 1:00pm via Sylhet airport.He also said since they had intelligence report on the arrival of the smuggled gold, they searched those seven persons and found the 119 gold bars in their bodies and luggage.
