11 killed in Jhenaidah bus-truck collision

At least 11 people were killed and 15 others were injured in a collision between a bus and a truck in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah district on Wednesday afternoon.
Of the deceased, five people have been identified so far. They are Reshma Khatun of Chuadanga Sadar; Mostafizur Rahman (25), a former secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Trilochon union unit in Kaliganj; Younus Ali (27) of Jhenaidah Sadar; Waliul Ali (26) of Chuandanga; and Uzzal Hossain (48) driver of the bus.
The accident took place on Jashore-Jhenaidah Highway at around 3:30pm when a Kushtia-bound bus, Gorai Paribahan, hit a Jashore bound speedy lorry coming from the opposite direction, leaving nine people dead and 15 others injured on the spot, Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge Mahfuzur Rahman said.
On information, a team of police and Jhenaidah firefighters went to the spot and recovered the bodies with the assistance of locals.He said that two more people died at the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex and Jashore Medical College and Hospital. Locals seized the lorry but its driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene.
The number of deaths may increase, the OC said.
Besides, vehicular movement was disrupted on the road for half an hour following the fatal accident.
Jhenaidah’s Deputy Commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath said the authorities will give the deceased’s families Tk 20,000 each for their funerals.
Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Subarna Rani Saha visited the spot.
