Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 11 people including five foreigners and mastermind Biplab of a fraudulent racket for cheating in name of giving gifts and parcels.
Additional Commissioner of Police Harun Or Rashid said this at a press conference at DMP media center on the Minto Road in the capital on Tuesday (September 6).
He said, “They were arrested from different parts of the capital on Monday (September 5) night. They cheated people in the name of giving foreign gifts and parcels.”
According to DB officials, gang mastermind Biplab was a porter. He cheated and became a millionaire overnight. Biplab kept a network jammer with him and in his car at all times to avoid arrest from the members of law enforcement.
He has several flats and plots in the capital. Biplab and other arrested persons collected common people’s Facebook ID, WhatsApp, e-mail ID in various ways and developed friendships.
At one stage he was trapped by sending expensive gifts, precious stones, diamonds and foreign currency. The fraudsters then send a photo of the fake parcel with the name and address. Deceived persons wait to receive the parcel in good faith. The Bangladeshi fraudsters working in the calling department make call to the victim as customs officer and said, “A parcel has arrived from King Express Service.
To release the parcel, you have to pay a huge amount of money as the customs house fee.” The victims sent the money demanded by the customs officer in the hope of getting the precious parcel. Then the person who gave the identity of the customs officer called again and said that the parcel sent by the foreign friend contained a large amount of illegal dollars. More money is needed to remove it from the custom office. If they fail to pay this amount, they threaten to file a case under Money Laundering Act and other laws in the name of the defrauded person. This is how they extort huge amount of money from different people.
