11 CU students suspended over various charges

The Chittagong University (CU) authorities yesterday suspended 11 students for different periods over various charges. The suspended students are leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League of CU Unit.
Confirming the matter CU Proctor Mohammad Ali AsgarChowdhury said ;”On recommendation of the Proctorial Body,The Vice Chancellor of the university gave the order with his own power .Later ,it will be presented at the University Board of Residence Health and Disciplinary Committee.”
Among the suspended students, four were suspended for assaulting journalist MinhazTuhin when he protested ragging on September 10.
MahmudulHasanRupak, a student of English department, was suspended for one year on the charge while SabbirHossain and RajibulAlam of History department, and TaimurHossain of Marketing Department, faced a two-month suspension, he said.
Besides, EmadUddin, SalauddinSazzad and Ibrahim Khalil of History department and Lipton Das of Physics were suspended for two months on charge of beating up SalauddinChowdhury, a Master’s student of Mass Communication and Journalism department, and SantanuNath, a student of Computer Science department, on September 9. Meanwhile, Rifat Hasan of Marine Science department and KawsarIbn Hasan of Botany department were suspended for six months in connection with stealing of a laptop from the room of JahinKhandaker on July 30.
SamdaniRahman, a student of Modern Language and Institute, was suspended for one year on charge of beating up Giasuddin Imran of History department at Suhrawardy Hall on March 29.
CU teacher Maidul suspended: Chittagong University (CU) authorities on Tuesday suspended Assistant Professor of Sociology department Maidul Islam, who was sent to jail in a case filed over making ‘derogatory remarks’ on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.
CU Vice-chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury said they took action against Maidul as per the university rules.
Earlier on Monday, Maidul Islam was sent to jail after he surrendered before the court on expiry of his eight-week anticipatory bail granted by the High Court.
On July 24, former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League and CU student Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz filed the case with Hathazari Police Station under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
On July 15, the Sociology teacher had to leave the campus along with his family following continuous threat reportedly from BCL activists over his Facebook post in support of the quota reform movement and demeaning the Prime Minister.
The BCL men also declared Maidul Islam and another CU teacher persona non-grata on the campus.
