10th JS adds new chapter in democratic journey: Speaker

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Friday said that the 10th Parliament has added a new chapter in the country’ s democratic journey.
“Parliament is the center of parliamentary democracy. The 10th Parliament will continue to work for building a non-communal and democratic Bangladesh in
the spirit of Liberation War,” she told reporters after placing wreath at the National Mausoleum at Savar.
Local Member of Parliament Dr Enamur Rahman was present.
Shirin Sharmin, elected Speaker for the second time, also said Parliament is the center of fulfilling people’s aspirations and it’s a place where people’s hopes and aspiration are reflected.
“Parliamentary democracy will become truly meaningful and flourish further through fulfilling the aspiration of the people.” She hoped that the opposition in Parliament would play a vital role in making the House effective through constructive discussion and criticism.
Replying to a query, the Speaker said it is a rare honour and also a matter of pride that she had been elected Speaker for the second time. “It’s not only an honour for me. This is also a victory for all women.”
Later, the Speaker paid homage to those who had been martyred on August 15, 1975 and also the four national leaders by placing wreaths on their graves at Banani graveyard. She also offered fateha there.
Newly elected Deputy Speaker Adv Fazle Rabbi Mia separately paid respect to those who had been assassinated on August 15, 1975 and the four national leaders by placing wreaths on their graves at Banani graveyard. He also offered munajat. The Deputy Speaker also placed wreath at the National Mausoleum at Savar.
