Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on Saturday said that the country’s existing gas supply capacity would be enhanced by 40 percent in 2018 by importing 1000 mmcfd LNG.
Of this, some 500 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) will be available in the first half of 2018 while the remaining 500 mmcfd in its second half, he said.
He, however, mentioned that the government has been planning to import more 4,000 mmcfd gas from global market by setting up land-based LNG terminal to meet the growing demand of gas.
The Adviser came up with the assurance while addressing a seminar titled ‘Energy Security 2030: Challenges and Opportunities’ organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in a city hotel.
With DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan in the chair, the seminar was also addressed by Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Power and Energy Tajul Islam and elite from industries, energy, banks, financial institutions and other profession also spoke on the occasion.
Eminent energy expert and Buet Professor Dr M Tamim in his a keynote presentation on the topic said that the country should give priority to development of skill human resources for creating good managers to run the energy sector. “Without all kinds of human resource development, Bangladesh cannot sustain 7-8 percent GDP growth,” he said.
Former Power Secretary Fouzul Kabir Khan, who moderated the discussions, said the dynamics of solar power generation has globally changed with the price fall of its equipment. So, like other countries, Bangladesh can move for solar power generation to meet its demand.
About power generation plan, he said the government has an aim to generate 35,000 MW of electricity by 2030 of which a big portion will come from coal-fired power plants.
He said a good number of power plants will be seen in the next 3-5 years under short-term planning while large power plants will be set up under a long-term plan.
On the proposal of issuing bonds for fund mobilisation, he said state-owned PDB is working on it to issue billion dollar bonds in the market, while some other government bonds will be floated to attract local investors to collect Tk 600-800 crore.
On the issue of regional energy cooperation and import of power from Myanmar through setting up of gas fired power plants there, the PM’s adviser said the issue was raised 4-5 years ago. But in the changed political scenario in Myanmar, the issue did not progress.
