Over 100 Yaba traders, including 10 relatives of former MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, who have been kept at a police safe house, are going to formally surrender to police on Saturday.
Separately, around 50 other Yaba traders are likely to turn up at a ceremony at Teknaf Pilot High School ground, according to police.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan will attend the surrender progreamme as the chief guest while Inspector General of Police Dr Javed Patwary will be a special guest, said Superintendent of Police of the district ABM Masud Hossain on Friday.
He said 107 Yaba traders, including godfather Hazi Saiful Karim, are now under the custody of law enforcers.
They also include Bodi’s three brothers – Abdul Amin, Mohammad Shafique
and Mohammad Faisal, cousins Mohammad Alam, Mong Mong Singh and Quamrul Islam, and nephew Sahedur Rahman Nipu, Teknaf upazila parishad chairman Zafar Ahmed’s son Didar Miah and nephew Mohammad Siraj, Teknaf municipality councillor Nurul Bashar Nurshad, female councillor Kohinoor’s husband Shah Alam and upazila BNP general secretary M Abdullah’s two brothers Ziaur Rahman and Abdur Rahman.
All of them face 2-16 cases, police said.
Through PA system on February 12, police urged those involved in Yaba peddling to surrender. They also urged people to join the surrender ceremony.
“The government will allow the Yaba traders to go straight if their crimes are light. However, if anyone amassed illegal wealth through Yaba trading, that will be confiscated and money laundering cases will be filed against those who siphoned off the money,” the SP said.
Around 44 people were killed in gunfights with law enforcers or rivals in the district since the crackdown against drugs began on May 15 last. Of them, 40 were killed in Teknaf alone.
