100-bed Cancer Unit at CMCH in the offing

A full -fledged medical centre for deadly disease cancer patients is going to be started in the port city very shortly.
With special initiatives the of present government this 100-bed Cancer Unit will be established within the premises of Chattogram Medical College Hospital . The primary proposal for the cancer centre (CC) approved by the Health Ministry in the meantime. Deputy Director of CMCH Dr Akhtarul Islam admitted the receipt of approved proposal from the concerned ministry. Dr Akhtarul Islam that govt has taken special initiatives to construct full-fledged 100 beds Cancer treatment unit at each of the Govt Medical Hospital situated in 8 divisional headquarters of the country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken this initiatives, he added. Under these scheme, Chattogram will have a full-fledged cancer treatment centre at the premises of CMCH. Dr Akhtarul Islam also said the construction works of the cancer centre will begin by next fiscal and fund allocations for these cancer centres will be given in the budget of next fiscal. The approved proposal also indicated infrastructure development, medical equipments and manpower employment for the centre, CMCH official said. In the preamble of the proposal , it was proposed for procurement of more four Radiotheraphy machine than the existing one at CMCH at an estimated cost of Tk.47 crores .
The expenditure for constructing the infrastructures of installing medical equipments estimated at Rk.10 crores, CMCH official said. The preamble of the CC was told about the employment of 53 manpower against approved posts. The preamble further said about 2.5 lakh people are being suffered with deadly disease cancer every year of which more than 1.50 lakh patients are dying on average per year.
CMCH Deputy Director also apprised that the number of total cancer patients across the country is about 15 lakhs and the ratio of cancer patients are increasing gradually. At present death rate with deadly disease is 7% and by 2030 the percentage will go up to 13% , he said. On the other hand , there are only 26 cancer treatment centre across the country where only 50 thousand patients can avail advantages of treatment . Out of 26, 10 centres belong to private management where treatment is highly expensive and poors and mid-income people could not afford these expenses .
Besides, there are only 10 Radio-therapy machines for cancer treatment across the country and the number of Cancer Consultants & Specialists are only 170 including public and private management.
The 10 sanction post of Cancer Physicians in CMCH will be filled up very shortly, he said. The CMCH official further said there are only 560 beds for cancer patients in govt hospitals and clinics and according to ratio of population, we need 160 cancer treatment centres where primary deadly disease may be diagnosis and the global standard treatment should be provided lessening the dependence of treatment in foreign countries. With this aim of global standard treatment in our country for cancer patients , present govt has taken special initiatives for establishing Cancer Treatment centres in 8 Medical College Hospital at Divisional headquarters . After implementation of the govt’s initiatives for CC at Public Medical college Hospital at divisional headquarters, 800 patients will get advantages of cancer treatment at a time.
