Bidi-workers representatives' conference: 10 lakh tobacco farmers can’t be unemployed

Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation leaders warned that 20 lakh bidi workers and 10 lakh tobacco farmers will not be allowed to unemployed. The demands arise at the conference of Bangladesh Bidi-workers delegation organized at Dhaka Metropolitan ‘Nattomancho’ auditorium on Saturday.
About 30 thousand workers from various Bidi factories took part in the delegation organized by Research and Development Collective (RDC) and Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation, says a press release.
The liberation war minister AKM Mozammel Haque MP was supposed to be attended as the chief guest. But the minister couldn’t attend. During the conference, the liberation war minister announced solidarity with the bidi workers and tobacco farmers by mobile phone. He said, I have declared solidarity with the workers representatives at the Bidi Workers Conference. I hope In the Parliament; the Prime Minister will look after the problem.
Former President of Bangladesh Trade Union Center Manzurul Ahsan Khan was the special guest in the delegation. He said that from the Pakistan period we were involved in the Bidi workers movement. We declare solidarity with this fair movement of workers. He also said that the struggle for the movement of Bidi workers will be in the ‘Jatiya Sangsad’ and we will struggle outside.
General Secretary of Jatiya Somajtantric Party (JSD) Nazmul Haque, MP, Bangladesh Awami League Fazlul Haque MP and Kobi Kazi Roji MP addressed at bidi-labor representatives conference. Poet Kazi Roji MP said, ‘No discrimination. I want to see the same rules for bidi & cigarette.’
The Chief Speaker of conference was Professor of Dhaka University and chairperson of the RDC Mesbah Kamal. He said that the bidi industry can’t be destroyed without alternate job arrangements. Bidi & cigarettes both are harmful to health. Both of them have to be closed together.
