10 killed, 50 hurt in Sirajganj road crash

Staff Reporter :At least ten people were killed and 50 others received serious injuries in a tragic road accident in Sirajganj on Saturday.Of the injured, the condition of ten are stated to be critical. Police could not identify most of the deceased immediately. A deceased was identified as Asadul, son of Mafizuddin hailed from Saghata of Gaibandha. Witnesses said the accident took place on the west end of Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge at Simanto Bazar area of Sirajganj when a Dhaka-bound Antar Paribahan bus collided head-on with a northern region-bound truck at 3:00pm. Witnesses said, the driver of a tin-laden truck lost control of the vehicle after its front tyre burst. The truck collided head on with a Dhaka-bound bus of Antar Paribahan around 3pm. Another Dhaka-bound bus of Nabil Paribahan hit the Antar Paribahan bus from the rear end leaving two persons killed on the spot. Four others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospitals. Resident Medical Officer of Sirajganj Sadar Hospital Faridul Islam said four more persons died in the hospital.Officer-in-Charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West Zone Police Station, Md Helal Uddin said the death toll on Saturday’s accident, which occurred in Konabari area of Kamarkhand Upazila, might further rise. He said, the injured were taken to Sirajganj General Hospital. Meanwhile, local MP Millat Munna and Deputy Commissioner [DC] Billal Hossain visited the hospital to see the injured passengers and asked the hospital authorities to provide treatment. The bodies were kept at the hospital’s mortuary, he added. The accident caused severe traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Bogra Highway.
