Staff Reporter :
Ten eminent citizens on Saturday protested the incident of launching attack, vandalising and looting at least 75 Hindu houses in Sunamganj’s Noagaon village over a Facebook post criticising a Hefajat leader’s statement.
“We are appalled by the incident during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” the statement reads.
Demanding immediate arrest of Hefajat leader Mamunul Haque and the other culprits involved in the incident, they said local administration and law enforcement agencies did not take any steps despite having information about the possible attack.
Hefajat and Jamaat dared to carry out such attacks at different places of the country in the last few years after being indulged by different quarters, the statement added.
The renowned citizens in their statement alleged BTRC did not take any steps against the communal forces that have been defaming progressive citizens on social media.
They urged BTRC to take due steps in this connection.
The citizens say they have an anxiety that the Shalla incident will tarnish the country’s image, which will present Bangladesh as a “negative country” before the international arena.
They observed that justice is yet to be served in such cases of the past.
Our fear is that if such communal incidents continue, Bangladesh will not move forward, rather lag behind and all the achievements so far will go in vain.
The ten eminent citizens are— Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, Hasan Azizul Haque, Shamsuzzaman Khan, Sarwar Ali, Mofidul Hoque, Mamunur Rashid, Muntasir Mamun, Shahriar Kabir, Abdus Selim and Nasiruddin Yousuff.
