A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced one person to death and two others to life-term imprisonment for the murder of Ntv video editor Atikul Islam Atik.
The Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 of Dhaka sentenced Shakil Sikder, 36, to death while Abdullah Md Ibne Ali Sarker Nahid, 36, and Ali Forkan, 36, were awarded life-term imprisonment twice, under two sections of the Penal Code. The two life term punishments will run concurrently. Judge Md Nuruzzaman pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. He also
fined them Tk 50,000 each. In default, each convict will suffer two years more in prison.
Fugitive convict Md Khokon, 40, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with a fine of Tk 5,000. In default, he will suffer one month more in prison.
When Ntv video editor Atik was returning to his Moghbazar home on Feb 13, 2009 from his work, accused muggers shot him at Taltala of Moghbazar and fled with his motorbike.
Atik was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died at about 10: 30 pm.
His father Abdur Rashid, a former Rupali Bank Officer, welcomed the verdict and hoped that it would be implemented soon.
