One more dengue patient died in Dhaka in the 24-hour period till Saturday morning, taking the official death toll from the mosquito-borne viral disease to 97 in the country since January 2021.
According to a press release of the Directorate General of Health services, 159 dengue patients were hospitalised in the period till 8:00am on Saturday, among whom 124 were in Dhaka city and 35 in other places across Bangladesh.
Dhaka city has reported at least 21,422 hospitalised dengue patients and 89 dengue deaths so far this year based on the statistics from 46 government and private health facilities in the capital, according to the DGHS data. No other parts of Dhaka division have logged death from dengue in the period.
The DGHS data also showed that Chattogram, Mymensingh and Khulna divisions each reported two dengue deaths and Rajshahi and Barishal divisions each one death so far in 2021.
Month-wise, the highest 34 dengue deaths were reported in August, followed by September with 23
deaths, October with 22, July with 12 and November with six deaths, said the DGHS press release.
In terms of month-wise hospitalisation, the highest 7,841 dengue patients were hospitalised in September, followed by August with 7,698, October with 5,604, July with 2,286 and November with 1,848.
The health directorate reported 372 hospitalised dengue cases from January to June and recorded no deaths in the first half of 2021.
On Saturday, 677 dengue patients, including 542 in Dhaka, were undergoing treatment at public and private health facilities across the country.
