One person was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Awami League at Boalmari upazila in Faridpur district on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ahad Matubbar, 30, son of Aktar Matubbar from Mohanpur village under Satoir union.
High tension was prevailing centering fish cultivatio in a beel (water body) named `Foliar beel’ between two rival groups of local Awami League (AL).
Local sources said, there is a samity named `Foliar Beel Water Management Cooperative Society Limited. One group is led by Sayed Shahidur Rahman Sajal, Satoir Union Parishad (UP) Chairman and Boalmari Upazila Awami League’s (AL) Information and Research Secretary.
The other group is headed by Abdul Wahab Mollah alias Tara Mollah, President of Boalmari Union AL and Foliar Beel Water Management Cooperative Society Limited and Md. Enem Mollah, Boalmari Upazila AL Executive Committee Member. The beel is at the junction of four villages namely Syedpur, Chalinagar, Ramnagar and Laxmipur of Boalmari Union and three villages of Satoir Union namely Satoir, Mohanpur and Shibanandapur.
At 8 a.m. on the day of occurrence, 10 to 12 farmers of Mohanpur village went to the beel to cultivate fish in their own pond. But the supporters of Tara Mollah and Elem Mollah group attacked them. Then the clash began between the two rival groups. The injured Daud Sheikh, age 65 from Chalinagar was referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Pachu Mollah, age 65 from Shibanandapur was admitted to Boalmari upazila Health Complex.
Officer-in-charge of Boalmari Thana AKM Aminul Haq said, one person was killed in the clash. RAB and police forcesl have been deployed in the beel area.
