1.78 m tonnes Boro output expected in Sylhet Divn

A total of 1.78 million tonnes of Boro paddy are expected to be produced in Sylhet division during the current season, official sources informed.
 It includes 279,988 tonnes from 78,935 hectares of land in Sylhet district, 193,620 tonnes from 52,336 hectares in Moulvibazar, 470,947 tonnes from 113,020 hectares in Habiganj and highest 837,582 tonnes from 220,805 hectares of land in Sunamganj during the season.
Additional director of DAE, Sylhet Division Krishna Chandra Hore said Boro paddy cultivation had already exceeded to 465,096 hectares against the previously set target at 456,835 hectares of land in four districts of the division.
The senior official further said farmers are now busy in the farming of the important crop this time. In the haor (low-lying) region however, the farmers have almost completed transplanting, the official said, they can cultivate the paddy till the end of February. Over 13,000 tonnes of high yielding varieties and quality Boro seeds from the BADC were supplied to the farmers in all the districts of the division, the official added.
Deputy Director of the divisional office of DAE Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid said, About 55 per cent areas are cultivated on the 106 haors in the region, some additional steps are being taken up for all out coordination and monitoring of the agriculture staff. he added.
The farmers are cultivating hybrid, high yielding varieties and the different local varieties of Boro paddy, The farmers are also showing their interest for maximising the crop production in the region this year, he added.
On the other hand, BADC (Irrigation) Assistant Engineer, Sylhet Rubaiyat Al Masum informed. some 20 small scale irrigation projects in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet had been launched for the first time this year for bringing additional lands under Boro cultivation.
Boro cultivation surpasses target in Narsingdi
Narsingdi Correspondent adds: Cultivation of Boro paddy in the district has surpassed the target fixed by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the current season.
Deputy Director of DAE Latafat Hossain said farmers of the district have finally cultivated the paddy on 55,600 hectares of land against the target of 54,800 hectares.
The crop is growing excellent under a favorable climate condition and the enthusiastic farmers have engaged their all-out efforts to make the current Boro farming successful, he added.
Farmers and the officials of DAE hope that if the favorable climate condition prevailed in the coming couple of weeks, about 2,50,000 tonnes of Boro rice would be produced in the district this season.
DAE provided the farmers with logistic support including fertilizers, insecticides and necessary agriculture inputs. BADC also supplied quality seeds to the farmers at a fair price to the farmers to make the cultivation programme successful.
