The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target of producing over 1.01 lakh tonnes of wheat from 31,005 hectares of land for Rangpur agriculture region during the current Rabi season.
According to the DAE, the farmers became inspired to cultivate wheat on more land this time in all five districts under the region after getting super bumper production with lucrative price last season.
“The enthusiastic farmers have already sowed wheat seed on 2,145 hectares of land in the region as the process has been getting momentum with progress in harvesting Aman crop,” said Horticulture Specialist of DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and different agriculture related organisations have taken adequate steps to make wheat farming programme successful.
“Quality wheat seed, latest technologies, fertilisers and other inputs are being provided to the farmers for promoting cultivation of highly profitable wheat crop having huge demand in local markets with high price,” Mesbahul added.
Dinajpur Hub Coordinator of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center Anarul Haque stressed on cultivating less irrigation water consuming wheat using latest technologies to save ground water, earn more profits and ensuring food security.
“Wheat farming has already become popular as the farmers achieved its repeated bumper production at the lowest farming costs,” he added.
Deputy Director of DAE for Rangpur SM Ashraf Ali said that the farmers were mostly cultivating high yielding BARI Gom26, ‘Pradip’, ‘Bijoy’, ‘Protiva’, ‘Sotabdi’, ‘Sourav’, ‘Gaurab’ and ‘Swarna’ after getting excellent production in recent years.
Former Adviser-Agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia and Africa) Dr MA Mazid said wheat production was being affected in the pasts due to high temperature from flowering to ripening stages for sowing of seed lately and use of low quality local variety seed.
“However, farmers are sowing high quality, disease resistant and stress tolerant variety wheat seed timely adopting the latest conservation agriculture- based technologies after harvesting short duration Aman rice to get bumper production,” Dr Mazid said.
Talking to BSS, Regional Additional Director of DAE Shah Alam expressed satisfaction over growing interest of farmers in expanding wheat cultivation and predicted bumper production of the major cereal crop this season in the region.
