Court Correspondent :
The verdict in the murder case of Jahangirnagar University student Zubair Ahmed was deferred to February 8 as the prosecution could not produce the accused in the court on Wednesday.
Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka passed order after a brief hearing.
Acting Special Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Taslima Yasmin Dipa told newsmen, “We were prepared for the verdict but the high officials of police informed us that the accused could not be brought to the court because of the ongoing shutdown and blockade.”
The trial of the murder case began on November 18, 2013 with the deposition of the complainant, Hamidur Rahman, the then Deputy Registrar of the university. Of the 37 prosecution witnesses, the court recorded depositions of 27 including the Investigation Office of the case.
The 13 accused in the case were leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League. Of them, seven are in the jail. Of the remaining five, four fled from the courtroom on February 23 last year after their bails were cancelled while two others are on the run.
Zubair himself, a former Chhatra League activist, succumbed to his injuries on January 9, 2012 at United Hospital in the city. He was beaten and stabbed indiscriminately the previous afternoon on the campus by the accused and their aides. The killers first took him to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar and left him there with severe injuries.
Hamidur Rahman, the then registrar of the university filed the case with local Ashulia Police Station.
