Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a plan to cultivate a new variety (BRRI-62) of Aman paddy on 25 demonstration plots in the district this year.
Aiming to extent its cultivation in different areas of the district the department has taken up the plan. The BRRI-62 is a Zink and protein enriched paddy with 100 days life circle. After harvesting the short duration variety paddy, farmers can bring their land under Roby crops, DAE sources said.
The department already distributed seed of BRRI-62 variety among the farmers free of cost. Per hectare yield of the variety to be 4 to 4.5 tonnes, the sources said.
Eight demonstration plots have been brought under the cultivation in Sadar upazila, two in Bakshiganj upazila and three each in Sarishabari, Madarganj, Melandah, Islampur and Dewanganj upazila.
Each plot comprising with 300 decimals of land.
Under the project of ‘Production and preservation of standard seeds of paddy, wheat and jute in farmers phase’ the demonstration plots have been taken, Deputy Director of DAE M Abul Kashem said.
