Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee and freedom fighter Zafrullah Chowdhury on Friday called on Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina to release Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson and former PM Khaleda Zia.
While inaugurating a Ramadan food relief distribution programme in front of Nagar Hospital at Dhanmondi, Zafrullah said that Khaleda Zia was not receiving proper treatment, adding that her physical condition was so serious that she needed to be released for better treatment.
Zafrullah urged the prime minster to release Khaleda so that she could have the freedom to decide where she would take her treatment.
Without mental strength no patient can be cured from a disease, he said, calling on the prime minster to forget the politics of confrontation.
Zafrullah also called on the BNP leaders and activists to take to streets to protest against the failures of the government.
The country is facing a serious crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic with the poor having no food, Zafrullah said. He called on the government to right its wrong policies in facing the pandemic and give food and cash aid to the poor.
In addition to GK chief executive officer Monzur Kadir Ahmed, president and secretary general of a faction of the Federal Union of Journalists M Abdullah and Nurul Amin Rokon spoke at the programme.
Khaleda, who was convicted in two cases, have stayed at her Gulshan house since her release from jail on March 25, 2020 on an executive order on conditions that she would take medical treatment at home and would not leave the country.
