Youths’ role as volunteers helps expedite economic dev

Speakers at a programme on Sunday called upon the youth to enlist themselves as urban community volunteers as their role may help protect lives and properties during disasters, expediting economic development.  
The government is eager to raise 62,000 volunteers across the country to strengthen our capacity to manage risk related to disasters, they said.
They made the observation while addressing the inaugural function of a three-day training course titled ‘Search, Rescue, First aid and Fire Fighting for Urban Community Volunteers’ at Fire Service and Civil Defence Training Complex, Mirpur-10 in the city’s Mirpur thana today (April 15).
Ward Disaster Management Committee, constituted by City Corporation, also mentioned about such volunteers, they said.
Mentioning vulnerability of our big cities to incidents of earthquake, fire, building collapse, flood and water-logging, they said local volunteers can respond to any humanitarian crisis quickly, thus minimizing the economic losses.
Referring to shortage of manpower in Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate, they said recruitment of volunteers will be helpful in providing aid during the calamities.  
They called upon the volunteers to take proper training for facing the disasters effectively.  
Supported by European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), Save the Children and Community Participation and Development (CPD) jointly organized the programme under the project ‘Strengthening Urban Resilience (SUR).
